How Comitas lives sustainability – ISO 14001 in practice
How Comitas lives sustainability – From ISO 14001 to lived practice
Sustainability is not just a goal for Comitas, but an integral part of its corporate strategy. With the successful implementation of ISO 14001 certification, an effective environmental management system has been established, creating clear structures, responsibilities, and measurable targets for environmental protection. The path to this was not a one-off project, but a conscious transformation affecting the entire company – from management to individual departments.
Sustainability as part of the corporate culture
Comitas' environmental policy is based on a holistic understanding of responsibility: ecological, economic, and social aspects are harmonized. The company follows three central guiding principles:
- Avoidance and reduction of environmental pollution
- Promoting efficient resource use
- Transparency and continuous improvement
These guidelines are not only strategically established but also concretely integrated into processes and projects. All employees are actively involved, whether through internal training or participation in company-wide controls. In this way, environmental management according to ISO 14001 is implemented in a practical manner.
Control – The digital control tool for environmental indicators
To make the implementation of environmental policy measurable and manageable, Comitas has introduced "Controls" to evaluate and manage environmental aspects based on data. Three examples show how Control works in everyday practice:
1. Waste management for IT equipment – thinking sustainably beyond the life cycle
IT hardware is an indispensable component of a software company – and at the same time a significant environmental factor. Comitas uses Control to analyze the entire life cycle of its devices: from acquisition and use to proper disposal. The goal is to extend the service life, conserve resources, and avoid electronic waste.
This includes:
- the targeted purchase of durable and repair-friendly hardware,
- the internal reuse in a rolling system
- the return to IT recycling partners.
Control documents all measures and ensures that recycling rates and disposal certificates are available.
2. Paper consumption – digital instead of printed
Despite digitalization, paper is still used in the IT sector, as external tendering processes, for example, remain very paper-intensive. Comitas has therefore set itself a clear goal: to further reduce its already low paper consumption by 50% by 2026 compared to the base year of 2024. Consumption is analyzed semi-annually using Control and compared to the number of employees.
The reduction is achieved through:
- the switch to digital signatures in contracts and offers,
- the elimination of printouts in meetings,
- the conversion of internal processes to paperless workflows.
Additionally, recycled paper is used, which does not reduce paper consumption but has a positive effect.
3. Energy-efficient hardware usage – smarter use of technology
Comitas focuses on energy-efficient workplaces and server solutions. Control provides detailed data on the usage and energy consumption of the systems deployed. Based on this data, specific optimizations were implemented:
- automatic standby and energy-saving modes for devices,
- Virtualization of servers to reduce physical infrastructure,
- Training for employees
These measures not only lead to a better environmental footprint, but also reduce operating costs.
Conclusion: Sustainability as a dynamic process
Integrating environmental aspects into daily operations is not just a formality at Comitas, but an active commitment to corporate responsibility. ISO 14001 provides the structure and operational basis for effective environmental management through defined controls.
Anyone who takes sustainability seriously needs clear goals, measurable data, and the commitment of the entire organization. Only then will environmental policy have a real impact – day after day, project after project.
