Artificial intelligence in software development – where do we stand today?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has developed rapidly in recent years and is now an indispensable part of modern software development. Since the release of ChatGPT, the perception and use of AI technologies has changed significantly. Software companies worldwide are increasingly relying on AI-powered tools to make processes more efficient and increase productivity. But how far has the integration of AI in the software industry really progressed?

The data comes from the Swiss Software Industry Survey 2024 (SSIS 2024), which examines the use and integration of AI in Swiss software companies.

AI as an integral part of software development

According to recent studies, 46,8% of Swiss software companies are already using AI technology productively in their development processes. AI has become particularly well-established in software programming and maintenance. Despite this progress, however, there are significant differences in its adoption across the individual phases of the software development lifecycle. While AI is widely used for coding and maintenance, its use in design (31,7%), testing (29,2%), and analysis (25,2%) still has room for improvement.

Advantages and challenges of AI in software development

The use of AI in software development offers numerous advantages. Companies primarily expect increased efficiency (73,9%) and a reduction in time-consuming tasks for their employees (71,9%). Furthermore, AI improves code quality, aids in error detection, and supports developers with intelligent suggestions. However, there are also challenges: Implementation requires specific expertise, and many companies are still in the early stages of AI adoption.

The future of AI in software development

Although some companies are still hesitant, a clear trend toward increased AI integration is emerging. Nearly 70% of software companies plan to use AI more extensively in the future, and 65,8% intend to invest specifically in AI technologies. This involves not only optimizing its use in existing processes but also driving the development of new AI-powered software products.

Conclusion

AI has arrived in software development, but its potential is far from exhausted. Companies that strategically implement AI and train their employees accordingly will benefit from technological advances in the long term.
