The status quo of generative AI – where companies stand today
Status Check: Generative AI in Business Practice
We are at a turning point in digital transformation. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is developing at a breathtaking pace, changing the way people work, communicate, and shape business processes. What began with tools like ChatGPT is now a global movement that cuts across all industries.
The next platform revolution
Similar to the invention of the internet or the introduction of mobile devices, generative AI marks a new technological paradigm shift. This is not just about innovation – it's about a fundamental redesign of work, communication, and value creation.
Microsoft describes this development as a platform shift, driven by so-called scaling laws: the larger the AI models, the better the data, and the higher the computing power, the more precise and versatile the results become. AI is therefore no longer growing linearly, but exponentially – in some cases doubling its performance every six months.
Faster than ever before
The speed of adoption speaks volumes: While the internet took seven years to reach 100 million users, ChatGPT achieved this in just two months. According to IDC, 75% of companies now use generative AI – and this number is rising.
But it's no longer just a question of "whether", but of "how": How can AI be used productively, safely and responsibly?
The degree of ripeness is decisive
Microsoft distinguishes five levels of AI maturity:
- exploring: Initial experiments, often with chatbots or text generators
- ScheduleStrategies are being developed, initial pilot projects are underway.
- ImplementingProductive AI systems are being introduced.
- ScalingScaling across multiple business units
- RealizingAI brings measurable added value and is strategically anchored.

(Microsoft, 2025, p. 8)
How far companies have truly come in dealing with generative AI is revealed by a recent survey on "AI Business Readiness." Particularly striking is the proportion of companies that are in the maturity phase. Realizing The number of people located has almost quadrupled since April 2024.
Companies that get started early have a clear advantage – both in terms of the speed of innovation and in Return on Investment (ROI)At the top end, so-called "AI-rich companies" report... 370 % up to 1000 % ROI on their AI projects.
Trust determines success
Building trust remains a key issue – both within the organization and with customers. The use of AI affects not only processes but also values: data protection, transparency, and fairness. Microsoft emphasizes the principle of "Trustworthy AI" – a combination of security, accountability, and explainability.
Conclusion
The current phase of generative AI is more than just technological progress – it's the beginning of a new way of working and thinking. Companies that start today with small but concrete steps will not only secure valuable experience but also strategic advantages.
Now is the moment to bring AI into everyday life – boldly, responsibly and practically.
